PCYC Emergency Biggenden Cadets have volunteered 685 hours of their time at 25 community projects in the past 12 months.

At their first awards night the cadets marched into the Memorial Hall after gaining instructions from Councillor LoftyWendt.

State program manager Jenny Schoof said across the state there were 375 members at 10 locations.

“Those members have undertaken 6368 hours’ volunteering at 142 projects,” she said.

“I think that is simply outstanding.”

Ms Schoof paid tribute to Biggenden who had three cadets – Geoff Imhoff, Fiona Gethings and Kayla Flanagan named in the state’s top 15 cadets while leader Moira Thompson was named as a top adult leader.

Michael Imhoff, who had only missed one meeting through the year due to a SES land search, was named adult leader of the year.

Cadet of the Year was Cara Tucker, who has been involved with the group since its inception.

Fellow cadet Lucas McAskill took out the New Cadet of the Year prize. MONTO IGA has gone bananas.

Out of 380 stores statewide and 880 in Australia, the Monto IGA was the state and national winner for the best banana display.

“We were all going to get banana suits and run down the street but we didn’t need to. We won,” store manager Peter Gibney said.

Peter Gibney Not only is buying bananas good for you, but it’s good for the country.

The award was based on the innovation of the display and the sales increase.

Mr Gibney said bananas were pulling in more dollars than anything else in the produce department.

“It’s all part of an ongoing campaign, because the Queensland banana industry is under a lot of pressure at the moment,” he said.

“Not only is buying bananas good for you, but it’s good for the country.”

Most of the Monto IGA bananas come from the Bundaberg markets.

“Bananas are the perfect fruit really. They come with a wrapper, have everything you need and nothing you
