DUNCAN Scott’s number one goal is strengthening the community by promoting small business and sport.

The former dairy farmer from Wowan said his community suffered because mining brought prosperity to some, but they weren’t necessarily spending money locally.

“Small business is the best business,” Mr Scott said. “My push is to try and promote local produce and generally support our businesses at home.”

He said sport had potential to lift the community by bringing people together and promoting healthier lifestyles.

“Obesity is a growing issue in our area and if we can encourage people to get involved in local sports that will ultimately reduce the cost to the health system. It’s prevention rather than a cure.”

Mr Scott was also passionately opposed to mining that affected water supply. His major criticism of the government was handling of run-off from the Mount Morgan mine.

He said material coming down from the mine polluted the Dee River.

“It’s one of the most polluted rivers in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s acidic”.
