INDEPENDENTS Queensland is the brainchild of “fiercely independent” Callide candidate Michael Higginson.

“Independence is the cornerstone of our democracy – we need more not less,” he said.

Voters will be asked to “create a political tsunami” by placing the 52 Independents first on their electoral ballot and parties last.

He says he pioneered the backpacking industry in Byron Bay and Cairns.

His campaign will focus on sustainable living and food production for “ourselves first and China second”, better provision of rural services and better tourism marketing.

“I am especially concerned about the declining services in rural towns in Queensland,” he said.

“Rural towns need to start producing (green) food throughout Callide; it will produce jobs … and encourage people to buy cheap housing.

“With aquaponics my quarter acre can feed 10,000 people.”

He said rural towns also needed better transport, greater access to police and the re-establishment of “the land office used extensively by graziers”.
