OPERATION Aerate, targeting illegal camping, anti-social behaviour and traffic offences, is underway in Gayndah.

Timed to coincide with citrus season, Police Sergeant Joshua Ryan said the proactive campaign was a response to last year’s vandalism at local parks and concerns raised by town residents.

About 50 seasonal workers who attended a Friday night meet and greet at the Golden Orange Hotel-Motel received warnings about drink-driving and illegal camping, as well as a North Burnett welcome pack.

With overnight camping banned at Claude Wharton Weir and limited to a maximum of 20 hours at Zonhoven Park from mid last year, Sgt Ryan said police were proactively targeting illegal camping.

“If people see any itinerant workers in camping areas, please advise police of the time, date, vehicle and registration number and how many there were,” he said.

Workers were being encouraged to stay in rental accommodation or caravan parks, with Riverview Caravan Park offering a short-term discount.
