Junior judge up to the task

Simon, 16, to pick best in Gayndah Show’s prime cattle section

Central and North Burnett Times - - GAYNDAH SHOW -

FROM hoof to hook, 16-year-old Simon Kinbacher will judge the prime cattle at this year’s Gayndah Show.

Simon was selected by new prime cattle stewards Vicki Palmer and Robyn Roberton, who were keen to encourage youth involvement in the event.

“We’ve got 42 carcase cattle already and normally get 80 to 100 head,” Ms Palmer said.

With 19 classes in the prime cattle section, including five carcase classes, Simon appreciated the opportunity and responsibility to judge.

“It’s a huge experience and really encouraging that show societies will ask junior people to judge (prime cattle),” Simon said.

“It’s one of the main shows around the region.”

Simon said he would judge the cattle on the “most efficient beef which will give the most profit for the producer”.

His aim will be to identify “really good thickness, length, weight and fat cover” and to take different breeds into account when determining yield and dressing percentages.

The ultimate test of his judging will come at the carcase competition dinner three days after the show, when the slaughter data will be revealed, he said.

“(The results) help you to pick the cattle better and remember those characteristics when judging.”

The fourth generation of a cattle family at Boompa, near Biggenden, Simon’s passion for cattle has led him to compete in judging and parading competitions since age seven.

“I was associate judge at a droughtmasters sale in Biggenden and at the Ekka two years ago,” he said.

“Last year, I won the prime cattle judging for my age group at the Junior Beef Expo at Rockhampton and the Rocky Show.”

In the same week, he won stud cattle judging for the Burnett Sub-chamber, which earned him another trip to the Ekka.

He plans this year to compete at the bigger competitions – Rockhampton and Bundaberg – and to “focus more on leading our (Garthowens Brahmans) cattle”.

YOUNG JUDGE: Named the Burnett region's top stud cattle young judge last year, Simon Kinbacher, 16, will judge the prime cattle at the 2015 Gayndah Show.
