THEY say sport is 90% a mental game and, if that’s the case, the Monto Roos have got the upper hand this year.

Manager Matthew Dahtler said the team’s determination was its greatest asset and, coupled with a high level of fitness after a big pre-season, should make them the team to beat this year.

“They usually are fairly determined and they are all fairly fit at the moment,” he said.

“Now we are moving in to focus on defence in training.

“We will be retouching on things we worked on last year like numbering up and where to be on the field.

A trial game against Miriam Vale earlier this year highlighted the team’s ability to scramble as one of their strengths.

“I haven’t looked too much at the other teams yet but Mundubbera are usually a fairly big team so they might be a challenge for us,” Mr Dahtler said.

“We will just be focusing on solid defence when we come to play them.”

When it came to picking the grand final opponents Mr Dahtler said he’d “like to think Monto will be there”.

“If Eidsvold play well they are very hard to beat, so they might be our opponents,” he said.

ROOS READY: The Monto Roos may have been swooped by the Miriam Vale Magpies but they were happy with their start to the season.
