Farmers send hay to where sun still shines

KIND ACT: Monto’s Reg Kerle stocked up on hay right before the February 21 floods. He has decided to donate the lot to drought-stricken farmers around Longreach.

Reg Kerle: They have already had their chance for rain this year and missed out. I feel really sorry for those blokes.

REG Kerle is the type of bloke who believes in karma.

So now that he has no use for the 120 bales of hay sitting in his shed, he is donating the lot to drought-stricken farmers at Longreach through Buy a Bale.

“I’m a big believer in what goes around comes around,” the Monto farmer said.

“I’ve had Blaze Aid here helping me after the flood. I don’t even question it, it’s always been me to help out when I can.

“There’s no reason for cattle to be dying out there when I’ve got feed sitting here.”

Mr Kerle wanted to call on other farmers who might have had hay damaged during the recent flood to think of their western counterparts.

“Lots of the hay got damaged in the flood so it’s not worth much anymore. But within reason, some is still good enough to donate,” he said.

“I know a bloke who had a herd of 4000 breeders out there (around Longreach).

“Now he’s down to just 15 steers that he’s hand feeding.

“They have already had their chance for rain this year and missed out.

“I feel really sorry for those blokes.”

North Burnett Regional Councillors John Bowen and LoftyWendt were the contact people for local farmers wanting to donate hay, and said they only received offers from Mr Kerle and one other Gayndah farmer so far.

“We are really hoping for a lot more support,” Cr Bowen said.

“In the drought last year North Burnett got free hay delivered to us and it would be good to return the favour.”

He said it would be helpful for the Buy a Bale courier if someone would put up their hand and make a central place where people could drop off hay donations.

He noted also farmers should be wary about donating flood-damaged hay in case it was mouldy.

To donate phone Mr Bowen on 0458 625 961 or Mr Wendt on 0458 625 950, or complete the online form at www.buyabale.com.au.
