El­jay brings his bag of tricks

STUNT bike rider El­jay Driessens’ favourite trick, where he launches his bike up the side of a truck, is called The Splat.

But de­spite the danger­ous ti­tle, the en­ter­tainer said he had never crashed dur­ing a per­for­mance.

“Oc­ca­sion­ally a bike snaps a chain and we look pretty silly,” he said.

“And we have def­i­nitely had some good ac­ci­dents off­stage be­fore.”

El­jay, and his part­ner in crime Nathan “Mad Dog” Mum­mery, will hit the Monto Show this year with their El­jay’s Freestyle En­ter­tain­ment act.

“We are a mo­tor­bike and trail bike stunt show and also a com­edy show,” El­jay said.

“We talk with the crowd, make a lot of fun of each other and tell a lot of dad jokes.”

But although putting on a com­edy rou­tine would be high-pres­sure enough for

most peo­ple, let alone while do­ing stunts, El­jay said both skill sets came nat­u­rally to the duo.

They each have more than 35 years of ex­pe­ri­ence rid­ing bikes and have rep­re­sented their coun­try in cham­pi­onship events, be­fore form­ing El­jay’s Freestyle En­ter­tain­ment in 1997.

“I think we are nat­u­rally quite comic peo­ple,” El­jay said.

De­spite be­ing on the road for nearly 20 years, the act has never stopped at Monto be­fore.

“We can’t wait to get out there,” El­jay said.
