Vol­un­teer ef­forts re­warded

It was or­gan­ised byWide Bay Vol­un­teers Group and held at the Gayn­dah Town Hall last Thurs­day.

Group chair­man Clive John­son said the day was all about the peo­ple in at­ten­dance – the vol­un­teers.

“Vol­un­teers take pride in their com­mu­nity and have a pas­sion for the peo­ple in it,” he said.

“A high­light of the in­di­vid­ual nom­i­na­tions was the length of ser­vice and the num­ber of or­gan­i­sa­tions they rep­re­sented.”

North Bur­nett Re­gional Coun­cil Mayor DonWaugh was only too pleased to be able to recog­nise those nom­i­nated.

“No mat­ter how big or how small, you get a re­ward from vol­un­teer­ing,” he said.

CrWaugh said when he at­tended his first awards at Gin Gin there was only one per­son nom­i­nated from the North Bur­nett.

“Con­grat­u­la­tions on how it has grown,” he said.

Over­all ex­cel­lence award went to Doug Green, of Gayn­dah, while the spe­cial recog­ni­tion was Biggen­den’s Moira Thomp­son.

Mr Green has been vol­un­teer­ing for more than 10 years for Meals on Wheels.

When he is not ros­tered on he is fill­ing in for oth­ers to en­sure the de­liv­ery of meals.

Moira Thomp­son vol­un­teers her time with the PCYC ES cadets and go­ing group bush walk­ing.

She en­cour­ages those youth to vol­un­teer in the com­mu­nity.

She has or­gan­ised An­zac Day MtWalsh dawn ser­vice for the past six years.

Mrs Thomp­son said she en­joyed shar­ing her sec­ond home, the Bluff.

TOP VOL­UN­TEERS: Moira Thomp­son and Doug Green have served the North Bur­nett re­gion with pride and pas­sion.

“It’s the best play­ground in the world,” she said.

“In my mind vol­un­teer­ing is a sense of be­ing part of the hu­man so­ci­ety.

“It’s a ne­ces­sity. You get a real sense of achieve­ment by help­ing each other out and us­ing your tal­ents.”
