THE North Burnett will host the iconic Melbourne Cup trophy for a day when it tours around Australia from early next month.

North Burnett Mayor Rachel Chambers said being part of the tour would be an unforgettable experience for the region.

“We are delighted to host the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour on behalf of North Burnett region,” Cr Chambers said.

“The North Burnett has a long and proud horse racing history and was home to the first Queensland Jockey Club as well as the venue for Queensland's first Derby in 1868.

“The significance of the Cup in our community will be a positive experience and a unique opportunity for our residents to experience the thrill of one of the world’s greatest sporting events.”

The Cup will be in Monto and Eidsvold on July 31.

In Queensland, the cup will also travel to Brisbane, Toowoomba, Blackall, Croydon, the Whitsundays and the Gold Coast.

VRC Chief Executive Simon Love said this year’s tour would celebrate a heightened enthusiasm for racing among the community following Michelle Payne’s victory in 2015.

“Since the tour began in 2003, we have delighted in bringing communities together in the shared history and magic of the Emirates Melbourne Cup and Michelle’s victory last year certainly adds another dimension to those narratives,” Mr Love said.

“Hearing the many tales, from triumphs to tears and everything in between, as people recount their own unique experiences of one of the world’s greatest sporting events, is a joy for all involved.”
