Naming pays tribute to Ted Kirk for service

Central and North Burnett Times - - NEWS -

THE North Burnett Regional Council has honoured the memory of local man Ted Kirk by naming the Gayndah Aerodrome after him, for his services to the community and aeronautics in the region.

Mr Kirk passed away earlier this year and his family were at the official opening and naming, including his wife Grace Kirk and grandson Stuart Kirk.

“He would be absolutely thrilled if he were here today,” Mrs Kirk said.

“He’d have been thrilled to bits and very proud to have this named after him.

“We only found out a couple of weeks ago when the RSL informed us they had submitted a letter to council.”

Mayor Rachel Chambers made the news public to those in attendance at the aerodrome reopening.

“We did this as a special honour to one of our region’s great pilots,” Cr Chambers said.

Mr Kirk’s influence extended beyond the North Burnett.

Visiting Member for Callide Jeff Seeney spoke warmly about him.

“Ted Kirk was an old mate of mine, I knew him for a long time,” Mr Seeney said.

“I know he never spoke much about his wartime service but when he did he was a fascinating guy to listen to and his contribution to that war effort was only exceeded by his contribution to this community following that.”

Mr Seeney said it was particularly fitting that the aerodrome be named after Mr Kirk and congratulated council on the decision.

Federal Member for Flynn Ken O’Dowd also extended his respects to the family of Mr Kirk.

Stuart Kirk said this was a fitting way to honour Mr Kirk’s legacy.

“It is really nice, he loved flying and he flew almost up until he passed away,” Stuart said.

“He passed that love of flying through the family so it is very fitting, we are really happy to see it named after him.”

Due to the late nature of the announcement, Cr Chambers said more would be done to honour Mr Kirk.

“We would like to have a fitting tribute to Ted and his contribution to the region so we will work with the Kirk family and in the next few months have a bigger celebration,” Cr Chambers said.
