MARK Stone has been a barman for a long time and it’s one thing in particular that stood out for him while working in Mungungo.

”I’ve never met as many friends as I have here,” he said.

Mr Stone and Patricia Merritt have looked after theWaratah Hotel for the past 3.5 years but have handed in their keys and are off to their next adventure.

They had only been a couple for a year before moving to Mungungo from Toowoomba to manage the precinct, with the eye-catching garden bar encouraging their decision.

Their first major challenge came just a few months in when the 2013 flood rolled in.

“The bridge got washed out in the floods, and people couldn’t get to town to get supplies, so we set up a flying fox across the river,” Mr Stone said.

“We had a fishing rod, three the cable over, and pulled across in a little bucket things like bread and milk.”

One of the legacies they will leave behind is the Mungungo v theWorld cricket day, which will continue to run.

“We were new and wanted to support something in the community, and some guys in the pub were telling us that there was cricket here, but that they haven’t played in however long,” Ms Merritt said.

“Then, they said, we should have cricket.

“And now, it’s against the world.”

Some others changes they have implemented is expanding the menu, and making the garden bar even greener than it already was, and bringing in live chickens.

“They were rescued chickens from a battery farm over in Bundaberg, our neighbours have actually taken them on so they have had a move,” Ms Merritt

Patricia Merritt They are not just your customers, but they become your mates.

Their plan now is to see more of Australia and make some trips overseas, which also includes seeing some of the backpackers that worked for them throughout the years.

Aside from the peaceful lifestyle they found in Mungungo, it is the people that they will miss the most.

“They are not just your customers, but they become your mates,” Ms Merritt said. Occasionally returning to the North Burnett is also on the cards.
