Tackling the election

IN PREPARATION for Saturday’s Federal Election, one Monto man is on a mission to educate the public in lead up to the coming election.

Cadden Pamenter might be just 23 years old, but he is passionate about his hometown getting the best opportunity for progression.

To see how Flynn candidates would help Monto, Mr Pamenter compiled a questionnaire and sent it to all the candidates.

But he said the questions proposed, were not just his, they were contributed by the district.

“I didn’t want to just question the candidates randomly and say Monto wants this because I’m not Monto’s voice, so I ran a poll,” he said.

“There were issues ranging from more community funding, to NBN towers, roads, education, drought relief, arts funding and black spots.

“The issue that got the highest votes was roads and infrastructure.”

The candidates were sent a series of nine questions asking them how they planned to directly help the district.

“If I wanted them to have an easy time answering the email, I would have asked them simple questions but instead, went for hard, specific questions,” he said.

“I wanted to present to them that Monto cares about politics, to say ‘we’re here too’, and that we want to know what you are going to do for us.

“Our votes might not tip the scale, but we’re just as important as, say Gladstone, to this economy.

“Without us, you won’t get your dollar a litre milk, or Aussie Grade Beef.”

Mr Pamenter said he didn’t expect to get many replies, but eight out of the nine responded.

Though some of the candidates provided more extensive responses than others, all the replies can be seen on Mr Pamenter’s blog online at cadden.me.

“As a young person, I’m hoping to inject some energy into maybe getting people to think a bit, and get a bit more educated,” Mr Pamenter said.

“Whilst we can agree each candidate has been busy with their campaigns, not all candidates believe we Montonians are important enough to extend their time and because of such, not all candidates responded or acknowledged our request.”
