Rain, rain, come again
RECENT rain out in western Queensland has increased demand for cattle, and Monto Cattle and Country agent Brad McInally said this was reflected at Monto’s Annual Store Cattle Show and Sale on June 22.
“The whole sale averaged 327c/kg, which is one of our dearest sales yet,” he said.
“The widespread rain has really helped the market.
“We had buyers from places like Roma and Dubbo, they’re trying to restore cattle back to land.
“The average price rose 15-20c from our last sale, due to the rain.”
There were 1035 head at the sale, and though Mr McInally said they weren’t necessarily in the best condition, it did not matter.
All of the head were sold and weighed by 12.30pm on sale day.
“Cattle numbers are expected to dry up by August and September,” he said.
“A lot of people are chasing wieners at the moment.”
Mr McInally said he could imagine the prices going up even higher in the near future.
This sale came with a competitive component, with cattle judged by Trevor Francis.
Among the major winners was Lachlan McInnes, who won steers most suitable to grow to Jap Ox.
He was a double winner on the day, as he also won the champion pen of steers overall with a pen of Santa No 5 steers weighing at 405kgs, which sold for 328c/kg, or $1331.
Steers best suited to trade was won by Brian Stewart with Belmont cross No 5 steers weighing in at 417kgs, and then selling for 311c/kg, or $1298.
Charlie and Angie Anger won the champion pen of heifers overall and heifers best suitable for trade with a pen of weaner Santa heifers of 210kg weight, selling for 328c/kg, or $690.
And Kevin Keiler also had an exceptional sale.
He presented Santa No 5 heifers of 322kgs on behalf of his mother Coralie which won the heifers most suitable for replacement breeders category.
They went on to sell for 322c/kg, or $1182.
Monto’s next fat and store sale will be on Wednesday, July 6, where agents hope sale prices remain high.
