Dirty ute wins first

Monto’s Gail Nowland will take her daily ride to Ekka

Central and North Burnett Times - - BURNETT SPORT - Annie Perets

Gail Nowland I went and had some fun, and let off some steam, before coming over here.

THERE is only one place that neglecting to clean a car pays off, and that is in a feral ute competition.

Monto resident Gail Nowland, 25, can officially say she has the most feral ute in the Burnett, after she won the category in the Burnett Sub Chamber Finals in Eidsvold at the weekend.

“Basically it’s got to be dirty and broken, but still roadworthy,” she said. “The dirtier, the better.” While other vehicle owners spend the lead-up to a show working hard to make their car shine, the story was a little different for Nowland as she took her ute out on a property.

“The ute is always dirty and never gets cleaned, but it got worse last night,” she said.

“I went and had some fun, and let off some steam, before coming over here.

“And I didn’t have to worry about it getting dirty on the drive here.”

Adding to the feral look, there’s a crack on the front of the vehicle neatly covered with band-aids.

An interest in cars runs in Nowland’s family blood.

“My family have got burnout cars, mud racers and drag racers,” she said.

“My uncle was a champion drag racer and represented Queensland.”

Nowland will now be taking her vehicle to the Ekka.

“Actually, I only got this ute earlier this year, so it’s my first time competing with it,” she said.
