Final leg for Monto’s rally participants
Jock and Ann travel thousands of kilometres to raise money
AS JOCK McLurcan and Ann Green drove through inland Australia, they were greeted with a sight few get to see.
“There was green vegetation absolutely everywhere,” Ms Green said.
“It was a once in a 50 years’ occurrence by the way they were talking,” Mr McLurcan said.
The Monto pair spent 18 days on the road in the Great Endeavour Rally this June, travelling from Ipswich to Stanthorpe through stops including Uluru, Lake Eyre and the Finke Desert.
It was Mr McLurcan’s 13th time participating in the annual fundraiser for the Endeavour Foundation, and the 12th go for Ms Green.
“We covered about 450-500km a day, the actual rally was 7500km but by the time we got to the start and then back to Monto, we did about 8500km,” Mr McLurcan said.
Thirty-four cars crossed the start line but 31 made it back home, with three cars breaking down and getting abandoned in the desert.
Mr McLurcan and Ms Green’s vehicle was too tough to break, but they could relate to the hardship.
“We had our 4WD on 200kmh to get through the mud out in the desert,” Mr McLurcan said.
A road to Lake Eyre proved to be a particular nightmare.
“It was really corrugated and had enormous pot holes,” Ms Green said.
“It was the worst road I’ve ever driven in my life,” Mr McLurcan said.
“Monto roads are good compared to that, but don’t tell the councillors.”
When they got to Uluru, they said it was breathtaking.
“Even though you see photos on postcards, it’s just so different in real life and incredibly huge,” Ms Green said.
“It’s quite intriguing, and we saw water all around the base of the rock.”
The road-trip enthusiasts predicted the latest rally was their last.
Over the years, their efforts helped raise an impressive sum of about $100k for the Endeavour Foundation.
Shorter rallies and travel are in the plans for Mr McLurcan and Ms Green to get their adventure fix.
BREATHTAKING LANDMARK: Jock McLurcan is a Great Endeavour veteran, but this was his first time at Uluru.

Getting to see Uluru was a selling point for Ann Green to go on the 18-day trip, and did not disappoint.
