Cooper selected for Origin
Coach Kevin Walters picked the Murgon talent this week
MAROONS coach Kevin Walters didn’t show any hesitation to include former Murgon Mustang Gavin Cooper with a State of Origin series clean sweep in sight.
Better late than never, Cooper, 30, will be one of the oldest debutants after Danny Nutley who played one game in 2005 aged 31.
Walters said Cooper was a little shocked to receive the news he had been selected, after his name had been brought up a number of times before.
“His words were, ‘I thought that ship had sailed’,” he said.
Walters said Cooper had shown great strength within the Cowboys ranks and was a deserved replacement for injured Josh Papalii in Origin III.
“He’s (Cooper) been a great player for the Cowboys over the distance,” he said.
“Gavin is the best player at the moment for us to choose.”
Walters said the inclusion of Cooper was well approved by the rest of Maroons squad, particularly close Cowboys team mate Johnathan Thurston.
“I know him and Johnathan Thurston have a good relationship,” he said.
“I know there’s a lot of players amongst that Queensland team that are really, really happy to see Gavin finally get an opportunity.”
Cooper’s arrival at camp was delayed due to the birth of his second child earlier this week.
