FROM football players, to boxers, horse racers, Olympic runners and camp drafters Eidsvold’s sporting greats have been recognised with a new exhibit at the RM Williams Bush Learning Centre.

Exhibit curator and RM Williams Centre staff member Laurel Bayles said the idea originally came about after it was announced the Melbourne Cup trophy would be touring through the town.

“We thought we’d showcase all our local people who have achieved great things,” Ms Bayles said.

“Through the centre we like to celebrate our Aboriginal community and we are showcasing them in the sporting industry.”

Ms Bayles said she spent between 50 and 90 hours organising the exhibit.

“The process was talking to the local community in Eidsvold and finding out who had done what,” she said.

“There was a bit of research done.

“I know people who had done some great things and itwas a matter of researching families in the Eidsvold area and having the knowledge about of who was around, from drovers to rodeo riders.

“And I went from house to house, the unconventional style.”

She said the final result showcased the strong sporting days gone by.

“These are the days gone by and we will never have that again,” she said.

“We will never have a whole football team, we have to collaborate.

We don’t have many rodeos anymore.

“It goes from 1920s to now, from the polocrosse team who made it to the Australian titles, boxers who have made it to world championships and a young boy who came out of here who races at the Doomben races in Brisbane.

“You’ve got boxers, football plays, polocrosse, horse racing, rodeo riders, camp drafters, Olympic runners.”

Ms Bayles said the exhibit had received an excellent response so far.

“Tourists that were coming up from Victoria said they are absolutely loving the fact that this small town has so much history and sporting achievers showcased in this little building,” she said.

“They were amazed actually.”

She said the Eidsvold community could be proud of the exhibit.

“They can be proud that their people have achieved so much,” she said.

Laurel Bayles: (Eidsvold) can be proud (they) have achieved so much.

“It’s the first time it’s been displayed like this.

“People were very happy to come forward with their achievements.”

The exhibit is open at the RM Williams Bush Learning Centre in Eidsvold until September 30.
