ROTH IS ON THE RISE

Brumbies rising star talks about his future sporting goals and how rugby league and maths are one and the same

Central and North Burnett Times - - THE FENCE POST -

WILL Roth was singled out by coaches as a rising star in the under-14 Central Burnett Brumbies team.

The 14-year-old said he was just part of the team.

“I like to come together with my mates and just play the game,” Roth said.

The 2016 season was Roth’s first with the Brumbies and he said it was going well.

“I have liked all the season, it’s been good,” he said.

“There has been no stand out game for me; I have liked all of the games.

“I have good hand eye coordination which helps to do things and that.”

The Year 9 Burnett State College student said HPE and maths were his favourite subjects at school and he said Maths and Rugby League shared similarities.

“It’s just knowing what to do and when and what will work best,” he said.

“Like following a formula.”

Roth said this influenced what went through his head when he ran out on to a pitch.

“I think ahead,” he said.

“You’ve got to think ahead about what’s going to happen.

“You give the ball to a forward then you’ve got to think about what you’re going to do next.

“And what will be the best to beat the other team.”

The Brisbane Broncos supporter said he preferred playing “harder” teams.

“I feel like I play better, because sometimes with the easier teams, it’s shared around a lot more,” he said.

“But yeah, I like playing against the harder teams like Nanango, Cherbourg and Wondai.”

As for his rugby league dreams for the future, Roth is not quite sure what that will entail.

“I’ll keep playing up I hope,” he said.

“I’ll keep progressing through league.”

And will he try to make the Gayndah Gladiators when he can?

“I’m not sure yet about the Gladiators,” he said.

Roth is also an avid cricketer.

“My brother also plays rugby league and cricket, he’s 12,” Roth said.

“Though I probably (set an example) in cricket, not so much league as he’s played at a higher level than me.

“I just like getting outside and being active.

“It’s very important (to get outside and be active).”
