THE highlight of the Biggenden and District Athletics carnival last Thursday was the children’s behaviour.

Biggenden State School principal Ros Rackemann congratulated all their children on their fantastic sportsmanship.

“The day is not about winning but participation,” she said.

“Athletes sat beside the high jump stands and cheered everyone’s attempt.

“This is a big tick item of a sports day.”

Grandparents who had been attending for many years also complimented the principal on the children’s behaviour.

The only record on the day was by Ryley Gibbs, who smashed the nine years boys’ 800m when he ran 3:18.37 minutes, breaking Mathaniel Cuthbertson’s record of 3:34.51m set last year.

At the Ajax-Milo interhouse carnival, Ryley also broke Jye Treloar’s record.

At Thursday’s district carnival Ryley said he “had an inkling” he had broken the record.

“I thought I had as I ran a pretty good race,” he said.

“After running three laps, I sprinted down the main straight to the finish line.”

Ryley said he didn’t do any training for the sports.

He gets plenty of exercise with his footy training.

“I play for the Bundaberg Brothers Blues,” he said.

Timothy Geissler, Dustin Fawckner and Corey Smart were the only competitors in the 12 years age group.

Timothy took home the age championship after winner 100m, 200m, 800m, shot put, discus and high jump. Dustin won the long jump and shared the other placings with Corey.

Tim said it was good to compete against each other.

“We egged each other on,” he said.
