Gayndah team are South Qld champs
GOLF: The Gayndah Holden Scramble representative team has won the Southern Queensland Regional Final in Pelican Waters at the weekend.
The team consisted of Gayndah regulars Mick Coulsen, Matt Zillman, Shaun Allen and Jeremy Zahl, who managed to finish the final with a score of 14 under par.
“Winning that now puts us as one of only 30 teams left in the National Holden Scramble Tournament,” Coulsen said.
“It feels amazing and each one of us is very excited to have a shot at winning the next level which would supersede any of our expectations.
“At the moment it’s still sinking in that we have made it this far.”
Coulsen and his team are just the second team from Gayndah to make it this far in the Holden Scramble.
“Steve Trott and a group of other guys did it in the late 1990s so statistically I’d say this is pretty good what we have achieved,” Coulsen said.
“About halfway through the round we were where we thought we should be and you play as a single group so you don’t know how others are going.
“We had a figure in mind based on what the Northern Regional champs scores, which was 20 under par, with four holes to play we were 10 under and worked out that we needed a birdie on each of the last four holes to put us close.
“We managed to do that and sneak home with the last birdie so we had a feeling we were in the ball park.”
When they were announced as winners Coulsen said they were still stunned and excited.
“Jeremy jumped up out of his chair,” Coulsen said.
“We are all excited and are picking up the clubs every afternoon to keep on our game.”
The next leg in the Holden Scramble will be held at Twin Waters from November 25–28.
“There will be teams competing from Kalgoorlie to Broken Hill and everywhere in between,” Coulsen said.
“The tournament started with 6500 players and is now down to the last 120 players who make up the 30 teams. All of us have committed to going.”
The Gayndah team was selected after they won the Gayndah Holden Scramble Tournament and are now eyeing the national round.
