Coat of paint for timber pub

Central and North Burnett Times - - NEWS - Jack Lawrie

THE four owners of Mungungo Pub came up to give it a new coat of paint last week.

The old pub, sitting about 15 kilometres out of Monto, is known as a hub for travellers journeying along the Burnett Highway and beyond.

As such, it’s important for the pub to be presentable and hospitable for those passing through or staying the night.

Owner and manager Vicki Mackay, as well as visiting owners Chris Groth from Brisbane and John Drab and Mick Groth from Gympie have had the pub for six years, and began renovating five years ago.

The latter two owners came up to assist with painting the outside wall of the pub, just one of many jobs necessary to keep the pub attractive to visitors.

“We have a few projects to do to keep it up to scratch, because if you don’t it falls down,” Chris Groth said.

“But you need to because there aren’t too many timber pubs still around.”

Just recently, a corner extension was added to the pub to accommodate a private residence, as well as a water tank.

They’ve also added a cold room, lounge and outdoor toilet facilities.

“We’ve probably spent close to 80 grand on it,” Mr Drab said.

“We do it to keep the pub up to scratch from the locals.”

Upgrades and maintenance happen constantly, and the owners pride themselves on breaking even off the backs of the business.

“There’s more important things than making money,” Chris Groth said.

The most rewarding experience of running the pub has been meeting all the locals and travellers who pass through.

“Not one day is the same; different people come through every day,” Ms Mackay said.

“It’s also entertainment for the locals, because there’s different people coming through the pub and they get to share stories with them about what it’s like to live out here.”

Painting the pub’s walls finished up last Friday, and customers have already appreciated the effort.

“We’ve painted it in its original heritage colours,” Ms Mackay said.

“Locals have been trying to figure out when it was last painted; some of them are guessing 20 years ago.”

With most of the major maintenance work completed, the focus will shift to cosmetic improvements.

In addition, plans for the future are to flatten out the hilly space around the side of the pub to make it more accessible for caravans and campers.
