Emi gets an early Christmas present – a trip to America in 2017
AN EXCITED Emi Carlson got herself an early Christmas present, a trip back to America next year.
The pocket dynamo who turned 10 yesterday was named the Australian Barrel Horse Association’s (ABHA) 2016 Junior 2D champion at Making It Mega Speed to Succeed at Gympie recently.
Held over six rounds during April, July and October, Emi competed against 18-year-olds.
Apart from a seat on a plane to America, Emi also won two buckles and a barrel racing saddle.
On hearing her name announced as the winner, Emi broke down with tears of joy and then everyone else around her had tears of happiness for her.
Mum Kerrie Carlson said Emi rode her tail off.
“We are so proud of her and her determination as she was only nine years old at the time,” she said.
Emi was also runner up in the Junior 3D and third in 4D and won another buckle after being named the under-10s Little Drummers Champion.
Mrs Carlson said there were 400 under-18s in the junior runs over those six rounds.
“Emi was excited and looked forward to each event,” she said.
Her team of horses includes Mr Bidkid, Smarty Lawson, Pretty Vegas and her camp mare Guess.
Mrs Carlson said the association only took the first placegetter in each event to ride at Jackson, Mississippi in June next year.
“The whole family will be going over there for eight weeks,” she said.
“This will give Emi time to get familiar with her horse as she has also qualified for the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) event at Perry, Georgia in late July.”
Competing in America isn’t new to Emi who with Tamara Buczma in March were the sole Australian representatives at the Panama NBHA Young International competition.
This is thanks to her wonderful sponsors Debs Country Outfitters, Wises Mobile Tyres, Taleah Kate Designs, CC Tack Shack and Childers Signs and Designs for believing in her.
Emi utilises the Dallarnil Sportsground for her training.
She said she fed her horses twice a day so they could go faster.
She is pretty chuffed she now has 10 buckles to her older brother’s four.
On November 12 at the Infinity Downs Barrels at Rockhampton Emi on Pirate Spider in one of her events unfortunately knocked the second drum. A clean run would have seen her break D1 rider Christy Jasperson’s arena record.
On Friday night the family attended the end of year NBHA presentation at Gunalda.
Emi was named runner up in 2D and 3D, won 4D and 5D 1016 junior champions as well as under 10 champion in both barrels and bending.
We are so proud of her and her determination... — Kerrie Carlson
