Fast track to pool confidence
Parents praise swim lessons for safety
FAST-TRACK swimming lessons over the school holidays have proven popular with parents keen to get their youngest kids swimming.
The Learn to Swim lessons, which first took place over the week of December 12-16, are daily half-hour sessions at Monto Swimming Pool.
The lessons, held by Tonianne Ward, Helene McCracken and Summer Roth, work with parents to help instil young swimmers with the confidence to swim.
Kylie Grubb came with her son Jake, 5, with hopes of getting him ready for a trip to Cania over the holidays.
“We’ve been coming to the pool for three years, we’re trying to boost his confidence and make him less afraid,” Mrs Grubb said.
Fast-track swimming involves taking children to half-hour sessions every day for a week, to help them retain the lessons through repetition.
Between Cania Dam, Three Moon Creek, Mulgildie Weir and many smaller dams on properties, there are plenty of places in the area a child might need to learn how to swim confidently.
Instructor Summer Roth, who volunteers at the club over school holidays, said she enjoyed helping children learn to overcome their difficulties.
“I’ve been swimming for all my life, so been around the pool a lot and I like to help the kids out,” Miss Roth said.
“There’s water everywhere, so it’s important for them to know what to do when they come around water.”
Scott Brady’s daughter Ruby, age 4, had never gone swimming outside the pool, but he hoped the experience would be a jump start for swimming in a wider range of places once she was old enough.
“I want them to be able to come to the water and to be safe,” Mr Brady said.
While some parents watched from the sidelines, others dived in with their kids for group activities.
The half-hour programs will continue this January, with sessions running from January 9-13 and 16-20.
