New captain a long-timer
Kerry Beutel keen for new role
GOLF: The Mundubbera Golf Club has named long-time player Kerry Beutel as the new team captain.
Beutel replaces former captain Peter Hunsley, who will remain on the committee.
Beutel said he was proud to take over the role.
“It’s going to be a bit different,” he said.
“I’ve got a lot to learn from ex-captain Peter Hunsley.
“It’s going to be good, I’m looking forward to it as I can learn some new stuff.
“It was time to give Pete a break and we’ll see where it goes from here.”
Beutel’s name regularly features high up in the Mundubbera Golf Club scores.
“I haven’t been winning them all,” he said.
“But it’s been good to play a bit of consistent golf, it always helps.
“It’s been hot over the summer, so sometimes you’re getting a few good patches where you get some good holes and some consistent golf.”
Beutel said he had been enjoying the summer games in Mundubbera.
“We are only playing nine holes at the moment, not 18, so it’s a nine-hole sporters competition,” he said.
“It’s pretty much just a nine-hole stableford, you play off half your handicap for the day because of the nine holes and that’s how it works today.
“It’s just really social golf, you don’t really win anything and there aren’t any sponsors. It’s good though cause you still go and play golf.”
He said his favourite aspect of the game was challenging himself.
“I just like the game and the challenge,” he said.
“It’s always a challenge to try your best and to beat yourself I suppose.
“You are your biggest challenge in golf.”
He said he was looking forward to the club opening again like usual.
“January 29 is our opening day, we go back to 18 holes again,” he said.
Alan Potter won the Mundubbera Golf Club’s 9-hole stableford on Sunday, January 8, with 20 points.
Ball winners for the day were Peter Hunsley with 18 points and Jenny Lohse with 18 points.
Kerry Beutel, Graham Carlyon, Lyn Carlyon and Malcolm Dowe were also ball winners, all with 17 points.
Jud Whelan won the pin Shot on 5.
