Growers urged to register for tax

Central and North Burnett Times - - NEWS -

GROWERS who employ backpackers have been urged to register with the Australian Tax Office to access the new 15% backpacker tax rate.

Mundubbera backpacker expert Barbara Dell’Orfano said she urged everyone to register.

“The registration was really easy and simple,” Ms Dell’Orfano said.

“You just have to go to the ATO website, click on the link and say your business is an employer for working holiday visa holders,” she said.

Ms Dell’Orfano said if businesses did not register, backpackers would have to pay the 32.5% tax rate.

“At the end of the financial year they’ll have to pay tax instead of get some back,” she said.

“Up until December 31 they don’t have to pay tax, but from January 1 until June they’ll have to pay tax back they haven’t paid if employer isn’t registered.

“It’s really bad because they’ll have to pay a lot.

“They’ll lose most of their money, then they’ll say next year I won’t do the farm because I paid more tax.”
