Wrapping up the day
THIS year’s event came to life with the arrival of Older and Wiser in the afternoon.
People got up and sung along as the band went through it’s catalogue of classic covers.
“They knew the songs; so when the band were playing, they’d go up and play Hotel California and people knew every word of the songs,” Mrs Johnson said.
“Two of our members used to be in bands, and they had not lost their touch.”
Mrs Johnson said the band came up at cost specifically to support the bush.
“They reduced their price to assist the restocking effort and try and bring people to the bush.”
“We had a lot of support; a lot of people came up from the coast to give us a hand.”
Although missing out on the races and the competition was a setback, Mrs Johnson said the day still managed to turn a profit.
“We didn’t get the big numbers that we hoped for considering the work, but the people that were there we were amazed with.”
“We probably got about 70, 80 people there when we hoped for 200, but because there were people who didn’t stay the whole day or came in the afternoon.”
