Circus school entertains Eidsvold youth
CIRCUS: Young people in Eidsvold now have an avenue to take risks and get an adrenalin rush in a safe and controlled circus environment.
Youth worker Nadine Smith and circus maestro Tyrone O’Reilly launched the circus classes last Thursday.
“Things like this are vital for youth in Eidsvold because it not only gives them an activity, but teenagers really need that safe risk-taking in a controlled way,” Smith said.
“It’s not taking a risk by getting in trouble or doing something dangerous.
“They’re risk taking in a really safe way that promotes creativity.”
Ms Smith, who is a youth worker in Monto and Eidsvold, launched the program after she noticed a gap in services.
“I thought Eidsvold hasn’t had a lot of fun, different, quirky activities like this,” she said.
“I know Monto already has it through Tyrone and his passion, and so I applied for RADF funding and I received a grant and we thought Eidsvold could benefit from this.”
Circus instructor Tyrone O’Reilly, who has been involved with circus for 25 years, said the workshop was quite casual.
“Anyone can come down and have a bit of a try and see what they like,” he said.
“I haven’t done some stuff with the Eidsvold kids for a while.
“There are some talented kids already, which has given me a bit of surprise.”
He said they worked on a number of skills.
“We’ve got a lot bit of tumbling with the mini tramp, we taught them some of the basic skills we use in the circus,” he said.
“We’ve got a slack line, a type of tight rope that moves.
O’Reilly said they were hoped to make the workshop a regular event.
“We’re going to start once a month this year to do more with the kids,” he said.
“The physical side of the circus helps build confidence and the more confident people we have in the district, the better the district will be.
The next event will be on February 2, 5pm at the RM Williams Centre and then the first Thursday of every month. PHOTOS: TOBI LOFTUS
