Strong start to after-school swim
RETURN of the school year also means a return to after-school swimming lessons at Monto swimming pool.
These learn-to-swim sessions are aimed primarily at youngsters to get them capable and confident enough for squad swimming.
This year, thanks in part to the fast-track lessons held during the holidays, a number of kids have come back to the pool raring and ready to go.
Active Aquatics instructor TonianneWard said about 40–50 kids had turned out for the holiday sessions.
“A few of the kids had already done fast-track over the holidays but those that haven’t been in the pool over the holidays have been going great as well,” MsWard said.
“Because fast-track was repetitive, we were able to develop skills and fix up any problem areas.”
As a result, some of the kids have already been moved up to higher levels after only one lesson.
For the after-school sessions, which run from 3.15–3.45pm, kids are divided by lane into different skill levels.
Age does not determine which one goes in which lane, only ability.
“The ones that are a bit more advanced we can continue with those, while the ones that need specific work we can work with,” Ms Ward said.
“Today, there were six different levels.”
Swim instructor Jennifer Roth was pleased with the performance of swimmers in her level.
“I moved my kids up to a mini mini-squad and they did about 400 metres today,” Mrs Roth said.
“They’re the younger kids that are still learning some of their technique but are starting to put some distance into their swimming.”
With that level of progression on the first week back, Mrs Roth hopes many of her kids will soon be ready to move up to swim squad level.
“First day back after the holidays, most of them haven’t done any squad or length training, but they did really well,” Mrs Roth said.
“I’d like my groups to be ready to move up to mini-squad, which would be lane one.”
This year, it is expected some of the kids might move up to doing swimming carnivals, or potentially trials forWide Bay.
The after-school sessions run Monday to Thursday, one lesson a week for $95.
