Carving out a Valentine
A MONTO couple’s new engraving business can provide you with the perfect gift this Valentine’s Day.
Des Bownds and Helen O’Neil started up the business as an extension of Des’ wood engraving hobby.
“It’s a sort of a bit of both worlds,” Des said.
“I can still do woodworking with it.”
Des and Helen leased a laser engraving machine in December and are ready to take orders with a 10% discount across the board.
This Valentines Day, with people looking to find gifts for their loved ones, a personalised glass, piece of jewellery or item of clothing could be just the thing.
“We do keyrings, photo frames, cups, glasses, wood, acrylic, all sorts of stuff,” Helen said.
“The necklace is a good one; it can say ‘Be My Valentine,’ or something personalised.”
“We can also engrave photos to put pictures of your loved ones on things.”
The laser engraving machine, a Speedy100 Trotec, works like a giant laser printer.
In a demonstration of the machine’s capabilities, a small plastic necklace was fitted into a bracket in the machine, with small lasers tracing patterns into the surface.
Once the machine was done, the necklace was still clear until Helen put some black paint on it, bringing out the engraving.
The newly engraved necklace said ‘I Love You To the Stars and Beyond’, and was also patterned with stars and hearts.
“The type of plastic that necklace is, it just engraves into it and you can hardly see it until you bring it out with the paint,” Des said.
Des operates the laser, which feeds in designs via computer, while Helen takes care of orders and general administration.
“It takes a bit of knowledge to use,” he said.
“It doesn’t take long, but putting photos on is a bit more technical.”
The machine can even engrave cloth; the business label on Helen’s shirt was put on using the machine.
Des lived in Monto most of his life, while Helen lived in Caboolture until 15 years ago.
According to Helen, Des visited Caboolture and they just “clicked”.
With the new business starting up, they’re looking to put their new engraver to use.
Though they’ll be celebrating Valentines Day together, they’ll be available on the day to take orders for Valentines Day engravings.
“Just give your loved ones something engraved to remember that will last forever,” Helen said.
