Monto hosts school sports try outs
MONTO held the North Burnett summer trials on Thursday, with students from across the region competing for a place on the North Burnett teams.
Students participated in touch football, volleyball and tennis.
Touch football had the biggest turnout, with under-15 boys, open boys and a combined group of under-15 and open girls competing.
Monto State High PE teacher Anthony Gronert ran drills for the under-15 boys before finishing off with a round of games.
“We’ve got the tough job of cutting 30 down to 12 for our under-15 boys team,” Mr Gronert said.
“We’ve got Gayndah, Isis, Biggenden and Mundubbera but the majority Monto, probably because we didn’t have to travel.”
Some had it tougher than others; with 15 open boys competing for a team of 12, Burnett Bay College teacher Lesia Darling said it would be a singling out three to cut.
“Everyone here has good ball skills so it’s going to be a matter of finding the three who don’t quite know the game,” Ms Darling said.
With the girls, there were 17 in total; enough for an under-15 team, but the three open girls would have to join other teams in order to compete.
At volleyball tryouts, there were 25 participants from various schools vying to be on a team of eight.
Monto teacher Danielle Sinclair said deciding this would come down to skill.
“The kids we put forward here will hopefully go on to contest at regionals,” Mrs Sinclair said.
The tennis trials were supervised by Monto District Tennis Association president Rob Bygrave, who ran matches to narrow down four boys and four girls.
“We’ve been playing round robins to see if the cream will rise to the top,” Mr Bygrave said.
The next 13-19 cluster trials will be held for Wide Bay Teams on February 16.
