IGA donates $700 to fix Monto Girl Guide hut roof

Central and North Burnett Times - - NEWS -

MONTO’S Girl Guides received a windfall from the local supermarket to fix their building.

Ten cents from every purchase of an IGA product goes toward its Community Chest fund.

Using this fund, IGA donated $700 to the Monto Girl Guides, who are raising funds to repair the roof of their meeting hut.

The roof and guttering of the building had rusted out and was in need of maintenance.

Monto IGA manager Sharon Hanley approached them with the offer to apply for the community chest after seeing a Facebook post from the Monto Guides Support Group.

“Most people approach us, but I saw that the Girl Guides were looking, so I went to them,” Mrs Hanley said.

“I was a Girl Guide; well, I think I did it for a week.”

“Two dollars a week out of each child isn’t much, so hopefully $700 is enough to put a big dint in their fundraising.”

Girl Guide leader Donna Zumbansen said the Guides Support Group helped keep the organisation running.

“We have to pay rates and insurance, so they fund-raise money for that to keep it going,” Mrs Zumbansen said.

The Monto Girl Guide meeting hut has been around since the 1960s and has quite a bit of work that needs doing.

The Guides are still getting quotes on how much it will cost to make the repairs, but the donation from IGA is hoped to cover a great deal of it.

“This is going to be a huge dint so we’re very grateful,” Mrs Zumbansen said.

“For us, normally that’s a lot of pies to sell, a lot of raffle tickets.”

The Guides run two pie drives a year, and are looking at doing plant and cake stall selling items grown and baked by the girls.

These events are organised by the Guides Support Group for fundraising.

Most of the money that was in the community chest has gone toward the Guides, but groups looking to apply can get in touch with Mrs Hanley.

“We’ve given out a lot over the last two years, so hopefully there’s enough there to get them half a roof at least,” she said.
