Junior soccer needs adult help
JUNIOR soccer starts again soon in Monto and the committee is looking for coaches.
Last year there were more than 60 junior players, with teams in the under-6s, U7s, U9s, U13s and U16s.
While it is expected there won’t be much difficulty meeting those numbers again this year, getting coaches is another matter.
Committee spokesperson Len Felesina said some of the previous coaches had retired, hence the need for new volunteers.
“It doesn’t need to be high-level, it just needs people to put their hand up to help look after a team during the week at training and on the weekends at a game,” Felesina said.
“We do need a coach for each team because you can’t be looking after two teams at once, so we’ll need a parent from each team to put their hand up.
“If we don’t have a coach, we don’t have a team.”
A few coaches from last year will return but there are also positions on the committee that need filling, including treasurer and president.
With some volunteering from the adults, the children will be able to get on with playing.
Felesina said teams are organised around the number of players interested.
“Normally some children leave the district or decide to play other sports but across the board we never say no to any children who want to sign up,” Felesina said.
If there are more children than spaces on a team, multiple teams will be created to fit them all in.
The soccer season starts on April 22 but teams need to be put together within the next two to three weeks.
Training is due to start on March 8, every Wednesday at 4.30pm at the combined sports field.
Registration is $90 a player, with jerseys supplied.
Shorts, socks, soccer boots and shin pads must be supplied by the players.
