Couple celebrates 25 years of marriage
FOR Bevan and Lexie Holzheimer, 25 years of marriage is just the beginning.
Bevan, born in Bundaberg, and Lexie, born in Monto, met playing darts in the late 1980s, and the pair reminisced about the day they met and how it all began.
“I didn’t know him until I went to (a mutual friend’s place). I was just out chucking darts at the board. He came over with the boys and said ‘what are you throwing for tonight’s end score?’,” Lexie recalled.
“We lived together for two years. We got together just before the darts dinner and nobody knew we were together and the mouths dropped open left right and centre.”
Bevan was born in 1954 and went to school at Christian Brothers College. Lexie was born in 1955, lived in Eidsvold and then moved to Bundaberg where she married her first husband.
Her first marriage ended, and Bevan and Lexie started dating in 1989.
They married in 1992 and their wedding was unforgettable.
“We got married in 1992, a week after a cyclone hit Bundaberg,” Bevan said.
“We were supposed to get married at my brother’s place with his gardens but it got wiped out by the cyclone and he lost big gum trees and everything like that and (there was) just no way in the world you could hold a wedding out there.”
Lexie said they had prepared for months.
“A lot of preparation went into the wedding but due to the cyclone, we just couldn’t have it there, so we got married at Alexander Park in Bundaberg.”
Lexie has two children from her first marriage.
Anton, 41, lives in Rockhampton. Donella, 37, lives in Bundaberg.
Her grandson Anthony, 22, lives with them and is considered their son.
They are passionate about darts and often play together.
Lexie said her husband had a gift.
“He played beautiful darts. His glasses hung on the end of his nose and when his hair was all messed up, you’d not go anywhere near him, he was on fire,” she said.
