Grants to make road safer

THE lat­est round of grants to help com­mu­nity-based groups, schools and local government im­prove road safety has opened to­day.

Main Roads and Road Safety Min­is­ter Mark Bai­ley said grass-roots groups would have un­til May 26 to sub­mit their ap­pli­ca­tions.

The grants pro­gram, now in its fourth year, was an op­por­tu­nity for the com­mu­nity to tar­get road safety is­sues in the local area.

“So far the com­mu­nity road safety grants pro­gram has com­mit­ted more than $15 mil­lion to 166 com­mu­nity groups to im­ple­ment 242 ini­tia­tives, in­clud­ing bi­cy­cle and child re­straint ed­u­ca­tion, re­sources and train­ing, heavy ve­hi­cle fa­tigue ini­tia­tives and learner driver pro­grams,” Mr Bai­ley said.
