GUN CLUB: The Central Burnett Gun Club is searching for new members after a significant decline in membership.

The Easter shoot took place at the Central Burnett Gun Club with around 20 people in attendance.

One of the remaining foundation members Gary Darlington was part of the club when it kicked off in Gayndah in 1957.

“The gun club was founded in Gayndah and due to the large interest in Mundubbera, it moved here,” Darlington said.

“I began shooting guns when I was six years old and have always had an interest in it.”

Despite its huge popularity, membership numbers are significantly declining.

“It used to be quite strong and we had a lot of people leave the district, they used to stay on properties and now they’re getting jobs and are too busy,” Darlington said.

One of the Bundaberg members, Trent Alkemade said for numbers to grow, you need to advertise to the younger generation.

“You need to put the focus on Facebook site, put promotional stuff in magazines, you rarely see shooting stuff in magazines anymore,” Alkemade said.

Alkemade said club members could learn quite a lot.

“You learn hand-eye co-ordination and tracking, how to track the line and how to improve on your hand-eye co-ordination is the biggest thing,” he said.

“Shooting is a self-disciplined sport so every target you miss, it’s purely because of you, it’s got nothing else to do with the team, if you drop a target, it’s you.

“Every target you get is satisfying, it’s a quick cycle of reward.”

The next event is Saturday, April 29 starting at 3.30pm.
