RUGBY LEAGUE: With the success of last weekend’s win by the Northern Districts at the North Wide Bay trials, several players have been selected to compete further.

Taking place at the end of the month is the annual 47th battalion, which involves a selection of top senior players to compete in the North Wide Bay Rangers.

It’s the strongest competition in regional Queensland league and has run more than 50 years.

Lisa Anderson, manager for the Rangers, said the competition involved teams from across the region.

“It’s the biggest competition for league players and I’m sure everyone would love to be chosen to compete,” Anderson said.

“The 47th battalion is where all senior teams come together from the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Bundaberg, Central Highlands, Rockhampton, Gladstone and the North Wide Bay Rangers.

“We also have the women’s competition from the Sunshine Coast, Central Highlands, Bundaberg, south-west, Gladstone and Rockhampton.”

Six players were selected from the Central Burnett team. They were Jacob Klaasen, Daniel Augustine, Brendan Augustine, Mitchell Thorburn, Bailey Kimber and Cameron Macdonald.

The central division is as big as New South Wales.

“It’s the best of each area and out of that competition players are selected for the state carnival,” Anderson said.

The 47th battalion carnival will be held in Rockhampton on the April 29–30 weekend.

The implementation of a women’s rugby league team is a positive step in the competition.

“It’s always good to see the women playing the sport and we’re just trying to get a competition for the women so they experience the next level of the game,” Anderson said.

Selected for the North Wide Bay squad, Cameron Macdonald said it was a big shock to be chosen but he was very proud.

“I never thought I’d be selected for the Central Burnett team but it’s very exciting for all of us,” Macdonald said.

“We’re preparing ourselves for the competition. We have some very talented players so that should definitely help.”
