BOWLS: Monto & District Indoor Bowls Committee hosted a fundraiser bowls night on Saturday, raising $380 for the upkeep of Mulgildie Hall.

Though attendance was less than hoped for, likely due to competition with the Mungungo Hall Learn to Dance class on the same evening, everyone had an enjoyable night.

Mulgildie Hall has become more lively with the nights of social bowls held every first and third Tuesday of each month.

But with winter coming, and insurance costs ever-present, the hall needs fundraisers to keep its doors open.

Hall committee secretary Audrey Radel said they were lucky to get the attendance they did

“We have a dance night, church every Sunday, school concert and that’s about it,” she said.

“Every September to November we have a raffle, which is our big fundraiser; it doesn’t cover everything but it helps.”

Insurance for the hall costs the committee $1800 per annum.

Indoor Bowls Committee secretary-treasurer Kay Barnett said the numbers for truly competitive games haven’t been there for a while.

“It’s about half and half regular bowlers versus casual bowlers,” she said.

The night’s bowls were fairly casual, with a couple of newcomers on hand to try their luck against the more experienced players.

Hall committee president Joe Avis hoped to see some new bowlers from the event.

LINE UP: John Booth and John Myles on the mats.
