Why we all want to see better roads built

Central and North Burnett Times - - NEWS - Jack Lawrie jack.lawrie@cnbtimes.com.au

WITH the Monto-Mt Perry Rd bridge replacement done, there’s naturally been calls from both residents and the council to get cracking on the rest of the road, which is an important link between the Monto-Eidsvold side of the North Burnett and Mount Perry.

By extension, it also links us with emergency services in Bundaberg and while we have airborne services, the road still gets used by important providers and the condition it’s in puts many at risk.

Aside from the lack of sealing, there are a lot of close trees, so swerve too much and that’s it.

But that road might as well be the Yellow Brick Road compared to the gravel track the Monto-Gladstone Rd turns into when it reaches Kalpowar.

Having driven up there not that long ago to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in Gladstone, I’m well aware of its condition, and I’ve been told by people who live in the area that it has only gotten worse since then.

I felt genuinely unsafe driving on that road and I’m in a tiny baby person’s ’05 Toyota Corolla.

Little cars like that get torn apart on that road, but even in something bigger I’m told the fastest you can go is 35kmh.

Worse still, school buses use that road. It’s close to the Kalpowar logging site, with trucks going in and out delivering timber.

We deserve better roads. Get the word out, and maybe we’ll get them sooner rather than later.
