Repairs finally on the way for dangerous road

GRADING for the stretch of Monto-Gladstone Rd from Kalpowar to the Gladstone shire border is expected to finally go ahead in mid-June.

A Transport and Main Roads representative said these works would begin once road crews finished grading the unsealed sections of Kalpowar Rd and would likely take two weeks.

For people who use the road, it couldn’t come soon enough, as the 6km stretch of road has deteriorated to a dangerous level.

Peter Wilson, who has run the school bus from Builyan to Monto with his wife Kay since 1982, has grown tired of arguing for a better road.

“We started a campaign to get the road sealed and it took five or six years to get the section 3–4km from the Bancroft side of Kalpowar,” Mr Wilson said.

“It all comes down to money and we’re not at the top of the list.”

Mr Wilson has learned to drive to the conditions on the school bus run, but it still wears out his tyres and suspension.

Residents are becoming increasingly fed up with the state of it.

Bancroft resident Judi Baldwin said she was furious the council and Main Roads prioritised the other road section.

“I know we’re not going to get a bitumen road but (I think they should) upkeep the one we’ve got,” Mrs Baldwin said.

“It’s only 6km, it’s not that big.”

Kalpowar resident Adam Godbee said it was a matter of time before a serious accident.

“It’s just dangerous. We pay enough in rates, so why isn’t the road done?” he said.

“I’d like to see asphalt. Once you get to the top of the range, you go down the Gladstone side and the road’s beautiful.”
