Check out Monto’s social tennis
TENNIS: Social fixtures have started up at Monto tennis courts, and have so far attracted a small, but keen set of players.
Running 12.30pm every Saturday, the games are relaxed and open to players of any skill level.
Monto Tennis Club secretary Trish Bygrave said the games were flexible and encouraged anyone interested to come along.
“You can just come and we’ll make up a fixture format on the day if there’s enough, otherwise we’ll just rotate so everyone can get a game,” Bygrave said.
Junior players Ralph Domingo, Willis Bygrave and Matylda Dow enjoy being able to play social games on Saturdays.
Willis Bygrave, 14, who comes from a family of competitive tennis players, said he used to play the tournament scene, but these days prefers to keep it casual.
“I like how it’s not competitive, I like just having fun in tennis,” he said.
“It’d be good to get more people our age so we could teach them how to do it and have a good game with them.”
Ralph Domingo, 12, started playing two years ago, and likes the opportunity to get some practice in.
“It’s very good exercise,” he said.
Matylda Dow has been playing for three years and along with Ralph, has been taking part in competitions.
“I do the Gayndah and Monto tournaments, there’s one in Gayndah I think in July,” she said.
A while ago, Monto District Tennis Association received a Sport and Recreation grant to fix up the court’s lights, among other things.
Bygrave said once the court’s lights have been fixed, they’ll be able to start running night fixtures.
“It’s all in the process, we’ve got a meeting shortly and quotes coming in, so that shouldn’t be too far off.”
Event information is on Monto Tennis Club Facebook page.
