WITH Senior Constable Matt Stark arriving in town, Monto Police Station finally has its long-awaited second officer.

Snr Const Stark has been in the police force for 10 years and worked in a number of towns, including Woodford, Kilcoy, Caboolture and Mission Beach.

A keen fan of just about any sport, he’s looking forward to making himself known in the community.

“The country lifestyle for both living and working is very suited to what I wanted,” Snr Const Stark said.

“You’re not just doing one thing like traffic or drugs.”

Const Stark will be offsider to Sergeant Mick Bazzo, who has been the sole police officer in Monto for the past 10 months.

Sgt Bazzo said he was particular about who would be the new officer, and Snr Const Stark fitted the bill.

“A lot of it’s community policing; you’re exposed to things in rural policing that you don’t see in the towns or the cities, like issues with cattle or properties,” Sgt Bazzo said.

“Matt comes with a wealth of knowledge and background in rural policing and small towns.”

The Monto police jurisdiction area is one of the largest in the Wide Bay area, running north to the foot of the range past Kalpowar, down south to the foot of Three Moon Creek near Abercorn, west toward Rawbelle and east toward the western part of Mount Perry.

With such a big area to share between two officers, community policing plays an important role.

As an example, if thefts were occurring on one of the outer properties, the police response would focus on prevention and education.

“We’d do an environmental analysis to find out when the thefts were taking place, do active patrols around the areas and put warnings through the paper to report anything suspicious in the areas,” Snr Const Stark said.

Snr Const Stark will get to know the town along with his wife and children, and get involved with sporting clubs.
