Jobs agenda for Wide Bay

THE Queens­land govern­ment is propos­ing to in­cen­tivise em­ploy­ers in the Wide Bay-Bur­nett area to tar­get re­gional job seek­ers.

The 2017-2018 bud­get aims to boost em­ploy­ment through fund­ing a num­ber of in­fra­struc­ture projects in the area.

How­ever, the vast ma­jor­ity of th­ese projects are lo­cated out­side the North Bur­nett area.

Of the pro­posed projects, only the North Bur­nett sports grounds and Bur­nett Hwy Pave­ment re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion will di­rectly af­fect the area.

As part of the Back to Work plan roll out, the govern­ment will be pay­ing $1.8 mil­lion to 265 em­ploy­ers to hire 412 lo­cal job seek­ers and a fur­ther $2.4 mil­lion in Youth Boost pay­ments to 308 em­ploy­ers to em­ploy 450 young job seek­ers.

Em­ploy­ment and In­dus­trial Re­la­tions Min­is­ter Grace Grace said the pro­gram, which will soon be ex­tended to the south-east, has seen suc­cess in re­gional ar­eas.

“Re­gional em­ploy­ers are em­brac­ing the Back to Work pro­gram in ever in­creas­ing num­bers, with the pro­gram al­ready sup­port­ing over 4,300 jobs.” Ms Grace said.
