Bud­get sur­prise for horse rac­ing clubs

HORSE RAC­ING: Monto Race Club will have ex­tra rea­son to cel­e­brate when rac­ing re­turns to the track on Satur­day af­ter it was re­vealed ear­lier this week that North Bur­nett race clubs will share more than $180,000 in fund­ing.

The State Govern­ment is set to in­ject $697,000 into Queens­land rac­ing or­gan­i­sa­tions as part of the state bud­get an­nounced on Tues­day.

The Monto Race Club is set to re­ceive $106,666, the Eidsvold Club will re­ceive $15,500, Gayn­dah Jockey Club $60,400 and Mount Perry Race Club $400.

Monto Race Club sec­re­tary Kerri Wil­liams said she was as­tounded by the an­nounce­ment given they had re­ceived no prior no­ti­fi­ca­tion from the govern­ment.

“I put a race ap­pli­ca­tion in March but I can’t say when it will start un­til we hear from them,” she said.

“Our main thing is re­plac­ing the tie-up stalls. The cur­rent build­ings are old and too close to the creek which has been erod­ing from the floods.

“We also want an­other shade struc­ture for stor­age as well as a new tower for stew­ards.”
