Engines get revving in Mundubbera
MOTORSPORTS: For Central Burnett Motorcycle Club president Wayne Sparrow, seeing promising young riders on his home track gives him hope about the future of the motocross in the Burnett.
“Once they’ve ridden it once they’ll be back,” Sparrow said.
“We’ve always known we had a good track, it’s all about attracting the riders in the first place and once you’ve done that, it’s easy sailing from there.”
The club held its race day in Mundubbera at the weekend, with scores of riders from across the Wide Bay region and as far afield as the Sunshine Coast in attendance.
Sparrow said it was a great event for those who love riding.
“It’s good competition with some really fast riders at the MX track,” Sparrow said.
“We have some really good competition with Lance Cameron who races nationals and he is a junior under-16, Jeremy Sauer is another one and some older riders like Jason Clift and Mick Little to name a few.”
The competition involved a practice round for 30 minutes.
Each rider was placed into a group depending on the type of motorcross they had and the skill level they possessed.
The race began with the smaller engines of 50cc and worked its way up to 250cc and over; which is usually for the experienced riders.
Sparrow said they hoped to have more than 100 riders take part in the competition, but due to other sports they fell a little short.
“We were hoping to have around 90 to 100 competitors but unfortunately we only got around 75 riders.”
Sparrow said the track had improved considerably.
“The track is nice and soft and the conditions were great,” Sparrow said.
