Bowling day to thank the supporters
BOWLS: Eidsvold Bowls Club once again came together to thank the traders and businesses who support the region at their annual Traders Day.
The traders day has been taking place for a couple years and is sponsored by traders and businesses in the region, with the aim of giving back to the community.
Club president Lindsay Payne, said the event was a huge success despite his absence for the past month.
“I was away for a month or so and the committee organised this day and I’m very grateful for what they’ve done and for our sponsors,” Payne said.
“We’ve got traders from Eidsvold and across the district who took part in the competition which is great news.”
There were 60 players who showed up to compete as part of 10 teams from across Theodore, Gayndah, Binjour, Monto, Mundubbera and Eidsvold.
The season has been in good swing but the club recognises there is a problem with membership.
Secretary Lyn Tucker said numbers had been declining for a number of years and seemed to be getting worse.
“The last couple of years it would’ve been a par,” Tucker said.
“We always support our district so when bowls is on in Theodore or Taroom we’ll be there and that shows our support.”
Tucker believes the problem stems from there not being enough people in the town.
“We had some young ones we coached two years ago,” Tucker said.
“You’ll find there were about six of them and they left school and went away, only one stayed here.”
People moving away from the town is a challenge.
“They’ve had to go somewhere else due to work, and you’ve got the rest of us who are getting older. There’s nobody to replace them.”
The next event for Eidsvold is the Ken Mills bowls day held on August 20.
