NAIDOC shows the importance of history

BEING a journalist in the North Burnett gives me a chance to cover unique and important stories.

NAIDOC Week is one of those times which presented an opportunity for me I rarely, if ever, had a chance to experience before joining the community in 2015.

While the importance of indigenous history and culture is celebrated in each town and city I’ve lived in, none of those places were quite as in touch with the history of the land as the North Burnett.

Hearing stories I had never heard before from prominent people within the indigenous community gave me extra perspective, as it should.

Community is a powerful thing, another of the lessons I’ve learned in the past two years, and the community support for NAIDOC Week was evident.

There was support from all corners of the community.

I’ve always been fascinated by history without truly appreciating the oldest living culture in the world is the one we celebrate for NAIDOC Week.
