GAYNDAH and Mundubbera Guardian pharmacies are encouraging everyone to look after their own kidney health as part of this week’s national Kidney Health Week. Chronic kidney disease is a significant and growing public health issue, responsible for a substantial burden of illness and premature mortality. One in three Australians is at an increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease. Pharmacist Graham Rowles is encouraging residents to be vigilant with their kidney health. “The role of kidneys is often an underrated one when we think about our health,” Mr Rowles said. One Australian dies with kidney-related disease every 25 minutes – that’s 16 times the road toll – and kidney disease can affect anyone. People with kidney disease might experience common symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, high blood pressure, puffiness (around the legs, ankles and eyes) and need to pass urine more frequently at night. Adult Australians are at an increased risk of chronic kidney disease if they have diabetes, high blood pressure, established heart problems, have had a stroke or a family history of kidney failure, to name a few. Kidney Check is a simple test you can do at home, with one of the first signs of kidney damage being protein in your urine. “You can lose up to 90% of kidney function without being aware, as there can be no warning signs,” Mr Rowles said. If you think you might be at risk of kidney disease, speak to your Guardian pharmacist for a Kidney Check screening test developed by Kidney Health Australia to take home.
