Drugs seized in Monto

Central and North Burnett Times - - NEWS -

MONTO Police have charged two men with drug offences following a search on Friday.

They were charged with possessing and growing marijuana, possession of a drug utensil and possession of plants, cultivated material and suspected stolen property.

The men, aged 19 and 25, will appear in Monto Magistrates Court on October 25.

The charges follow what one magistrate considers to be a trend of drug offences further north.

Magistrate Cameron Press had six pages for the Wednesday court list at Biloela Magistrates Court.

“I think the whole town needs to go to drug diversion,” Mr Press said.

“Too many people think that they can keep coming to the court and getting fines.

“It’s obviously not working.”

A 35-year-old Monto man was one on the list, facing 11 charges including theft, possession of stolen property and possession of dangerous drugs.

However, Monto Police Sergeant Mick Bazzo said such crimes were rare in Monto.

“We don’t have a drug problem here in Monto,” Sgt Bazzo said.

“While it would be foolish to deny there are drugs in town, there are no real trends on what gets reported.”
