SOCCER: Monto’s junior soccer players have experienced a whirlwind of success in the Biloela and District competition, with the under 13 Strikers retaining top spot on the leaderboard.

At the Combined Sports Field, in the second game held at home on Saturday, the Strikers beat the Callide Panthers 3–0

Strikers coach Greg Barnett said the team was doing great after the initial re-adjustment coming back from school holidays.

“They were playing a bit rusty after the holidays,” Barnett said.

“Playing at home helps – it means parents can come out and show support.”

The under 16 team (just dubbed ‘Monto’) also won, beating the Callide Pumas 3–1.

At the beginning of the day, the Combined Sports Field was covered in a small layer of frost.

The sun gradually found its way out though.

Soccer club manager Belinda Barnett said the cold temperatures didn’t slow the

kids down.

“It’s ideal conditions for the kids because they don’t get hot,” Belinda said.

“They get hot and sweaty later when the sun comes out.”

With Monto hosting the game, the soccer club initially scrambled for volunteers to help out in the canteen.

Belinda said the community came through in the end.

“We got heaps of volunteers in the canteen. They brought in food to sell, lots of helpers,” she said.

Monto Thunder coach James Galloway said the under 9 teams had a good time out on the field.

“They’ve been going pretty well, having fun, which is what matters,” Galloway said.

The soccer club has announced money from Saturday’s game will go towards purchasing new soccer equipment for the players. All game fees from the next fixture day at the Callide grounds will be donated to the Childhood Cancer Support Group in Brisbane.
